Grass Valley movie theater employee reportedly embezzled thousands
March 14, 2014
A Grass Valley man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of embezzling thousands of dollars from Sierra Theaters.
Matthew Dillon Murray, 22, had been hired by Sierra Theaters approximately one year ago and was later promoted to assistant manager, said Grass Valley Police Det. Zack LaFerriere.
Murray used his role as assistant manager to steal cash from a locked safe on several different occasions, LaFerriere said.
"He started with small amounts from the cash drawer in May 2013," Sgt. Steve Johnson said.
Murray then stole a significant amount of money in late November and an even larger amount in January of this year, Johnson said.
He subsequently quit his job, and the theater put it together that the missing money was due to more than faulty bookkeeping.
According to Sierra Theaters General Manager Michael LaMarca, this was the first theft of this magnitude in 25 years of business, LaFerriere said.
LaMarca initiated an internal investigation that ultimately led to the discovery of several other cash shortages.
Sierra Theaters sought help from Grass Valley Police in February, and detectives identified the suspect as Murray.
Murray reportedly stole more than $8,000 — and a subsequent interview revealed the money had already been spent.
Sierra Theaters has since improved its security and policies, LaMarca told LaFerriere.
Murray was booked and released on $10,000 bail.
