Fire engulfs trailer at Penn Valley mobile home park
June 6, 2014
A fire destroyed a trailer and its contents early Thursday at a mobile home park in Penn Valley.
"The trailer is a loss," said Penn Valley Fire Capt. Clayton Thomas.
"The exterior is still standing but the interior is gutted."
He said no one was injured at the 1:47 a.m. blaze at the Creekside Mobile Home Park on Penn Valley Drive.
"One man was at home at the time, but he was not injured," Thomas said. "He was assisted by Red Cross in obtaining shelter."
Thomas estimated damages at $40,000, including the trailer and contents.
Although the blaze was mostly contained to the one trailer, it did cause some minor damage to an adjoining trailer, Thomas said.
He said the cause of the fire, which was called in by a neighbor who happened to be awake at the time, is under investigation.
The blaze started out small, according to the neighbor, but grew quickly, Thomas said.
By the time firefighters arrived minutes later, the structure was 50 percent in flames, Thomas said.
"The trailer was well-involved upon arrival of the first Penn Valley units," Thomas said.
"There was significant loss for the only occupant."
Firefighters from Penn Valley Fire Protection District were assisted by fire units from Rough & Ready, Grass Valley and Cal Fire. Units were at the scene until 6 a.m. Thursday, Thomas said.
