Duo arrested in vehicle, credit card theft

Two alleged truck thieves were arrested in Grass Valley after reportedly using a credit card found in the truck to buy a cell phone — and getting lured back to the store with the promise of a bogus gift certificate.
The California Highway Patrol initially took a report for the theft of a black Toyota Tacoma from Bowman Lake Friday, said Grass Valley Police Sgt. Steve Johnson. His agency became involved when the victim was notified Friday evening that the suspects were trying to use a stolen credit card at Radio Shack. The credit card had been in the stolen truck, Johnson said. Grass Valley Police officers responded to the store on Sutton Way but the suspects were gone when they arrived.
“An employee gave a description of two men who had used the credit card within the last 20 minutes,” Johnson said. “They bought a cell phone.”
The officer called the cell phone and left a voice message that the purchaser was the “lucky recipient” of a $40 gift card and needed to return to the store to pick it up, Johnson said. The two men returned to the store within 10 minutes and were promptly arrested.
Kellen Robert Lovell, 29, reportedly was found with LSD and prescription narcotics, and both Lovell and the second suspect — Kyle Gower Short, 18 — reportedly were in possession of drug paraphernalia.
The truck was located where the suspects reportedly stashed it on Highway 20, about a mile from Five Mile House, Johnson said.
Lovell was charged with first-degree burglary, being in possession of stolen property, vehicle theft, possessing a controlled substance, possessing a controlled substance without a prescription and driving an unregistered vehicle. He is set to return to court Oct. 7.
Short has been charged with first-degree burglary, and possession of stolen property and metal knuckles, as well as drug paraphernalia. He was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail and is set to enter a plea in Nevada County Superior Court Thursday.
