A man wanted by local law enforcement on a parole violation was arrested on vehicle theft charges in Grass Valley, thanks to an alert police officer.

The officer was on patrol at about 8:30 a.m. Monday and noticed a Honda that had been spray-painted black in a driveway of a residence in the 800 block of Forest Glade Circle, said Grass Valley Police Sgt. Steve Johnson.

The vehicle had current registration tags, but a check revealed the registration actually was expired, Johnson said. The registered owner was contacted and allegedly told the officer the vehicle had been sold to a man identified as Joseph Jerome Woodruff, 28.

"We knew Woodruff was wanted on a parole violation," Johnson said. "He had been avoiding law enforcement."

The officer knocked on the residence's front door, but although activity could be heard, no one answered, Johnson said. A resident of the house subsequently arrived and gave officers access.

Woodruff allegedly was found hiding in a bedroom. A search of the bedroom located controlled substances and drug paraphernalia, Johnson said.

A second Honda was located inside the garage and had been partially stripped. According to Johnson, that Honda, which Woodruff said was his, had been reported as stolen out of Roseville.

Woodruff was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, possessing stolen property, possessing a controlled substance, having false registration on a vehicle and violating parole. He was being held in county jail on the no-bail warrant.

Two women at the residence also were taken into custody.

Erin Kirkham, 19, was arrested on suspicion of having a controlled substance and an out-of-county warrant; she was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail. Danielle Christine Marshman, 32, was arrested on two outstanding misdemeanor warrants.
