CHP on hunt for Camptonville hit and run driver
March 18, 2014
The California Highway Patrol is seeking the occupants of a vehicle that fled the scene of a collision Thursday night near Camptonville.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., a man identified as Nickulas Maglaras, 48, of Oregon House, was driving a 1990 Ford F-450 pickup truck northbound on Highway 49 south of Ridge Road near Camptonville in Yuba County, said CHP spokesman Greg Tassone.
Another driver was traveling southbound in the opposite direction, driving a 2001 GMC Jimmy sport utility vehicle, Tassone said. As the vehicles approached each other, Maglaras allowed his pickup to drift over the double yellow lines, where it collided head-on with the GMC. Both vehicles subsequently became disabled, partially blocking the roadway.
CHP units responded to the scene along with fire department and ambulance personnel. Maglaras was evaluated at the scene and determined to be under the influence of alcohol and/or controlled substances, Tassone said. He was arrested for driving under the influence and transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital for treatment.
After the collision, the occupants of the GMC fled the scene on foot and left the vehicle behind, Tassone said. The CHP is conducting a felony hit-and-run investigation into the identities and whereabouts of the vehicle’s occupants.
