A Grass Valley winery won three awards at the 25th annual Florida State Fair International Wine Competition Feb. 7-9.

"We're very excited since we've only been bonded for three years, and this is our first competition we entered, and we ended up winning three medals," said Tom Besemer, who owns Besemer Cellars with his wife, Kristi.

The winery won silver for its 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon and bronze for its 2011 Sauvignon Blanc and 2010 Syrah.

"We entered the larger volume wines that we had available. Because we're so new, we don't have a lot of wines we could enter, but we chose those because they had been the favorites of us and customers," Besemer said.

The winery was established in southwestern Nevada County in November 2010 at 16535 Footehold Drive in Grass Valley.

"All of our grapes come from different parts of California," Besemer said.

"We have a pinot noir we're going to be bottling that came from San Luis Obispo and a chardonnay from the same vineyard. Our Malbec comes from Paso Robles, the cab from Alexander Valley, syrah from Sonoma, so we're trying to select the best vineyards by tasting the wines and see what our customer base is looking for."
