Benefits of Exercise for those with chronic neurological disease.
March 9, 2013
It is important for those with a chronic neurological disorder like Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis or any of the other numerous diagnoses that fall under the neurological disease category, to make exercise a daily habit.
Exercise can provide those individuals with structure to their day and help them to keep a positive outlook on life.
Other primary benefits include an increase in strength and improved balance.
A secondary benefit may be to lessen or slow down the effects of the disease process on your body.
The hardest part of any exercise program is, of course, getting started and remaining motivated.
It is important to do things that you enjoy, have fun while doing it and mix it up with a variety of activities.
However, do not just jump right into an exercise program. Doing so could lead to injury or perhaps an exacerbation of the disease process.
So it is important to always check with your doctor first. Your physician may recommend that you seek the help of a physical or occupational therapist with experience in neurological conditions. The therapists will help you identify types and amounts of exercise that would be most beneficial to you.
A good exercise program should include stretching, aerobics, strengthening and balance and coordination activities.
You may find you need to do several short periods of exercise throughout the day versus all at one time.
Make sure you drink plenty of water before, during and after your exercise session and avoid experiencing pain since it is not part of an effective exercise program for those individuals with chronic neurological disease.
Try to be consistent with your exercise regimen, but above all, make sure you have fun!
