Alleged meth dealer arrested on federal drug charges
April 5, 2013
An alleged meth dealer who was set to be sentenced to two years in state prison Monday — and who was arrested on similar charges Wednesday — now is facing federal charges as well.
The most recent arrest for Mark Dewayne Bowden, 33, came after he was pulled over by a Nevada County Sheriff’s deputy at 1 a.m. Wednesday on Highway 49 near the Sacramento Street exit. His truck was searched, and deputies allegedly located 81.5 grams of methamphetamine in his backpack, as well as packaging material.
Bowden is to be sentenced Monday on one count of possessing a controlled substance with intent to sell for a 2012 arrest, when he was pulled over by a California Highway Patrol officer with nearly 2 pounds of meth, a digital scale, packaging materials and about $5,000 in cash. The prosecutor called it one of the largest methamphetamine seizures in Nevada County with the street value estimated at between $27,000 and $80,000.
He now has been served with a federal arrest warrant stemming from an arrest in mid-February.
Bowden had been arrested Feb. 12 by Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force member Michael Vingom after he was spotted driving in the Glenbrook Basin area; a search allegedly found approximately 2 ounces of meth with an estimated street value of $1,600.
“We contacted the feds based on his prior history and the continuing offenses,” Vingom said. “He had accepted a plea deal to a stipulated term of two years (for the 2012 case) and while he’s out on bail, pending sentencing, he’s still out there dealing meth … He’s not learning his lesson.”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Olusere Olowoyeye issued an indictment in late March charging Bowden with possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, with a forfeiture allegation. According to the indictment, Bowden faces a maximum of 40 years, or a fine of $5 million, or both, as well as at least four years parole.
Nevada County Assistant District Attorney Anna Ferguson indicated Bowden’s local sentencing will still take place Monday, but that in all likelihood charges will not be filed in Wednesday’s arrest. He currently is being held in county jail without bail.
