Alleged assault involving a knife leads to arrest
February 9, 2013
A North San Juan man was arrested and booked into county jail after allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend in the leg during a domestic dispute.
The woman, who was not identified, had gone to Richard Dorton’s residence Monday to retrieve some of her belongings, said Nevada County Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Powell.
She was there with her stepfather and another man, identified as Shane Moran, Powell said.
Dorton allegedly became angry when she started loading her children’s belongings into the truck, grabbed her arm and pulled her out of the vehicle.
Moran then grabbed Dorton’s shoulder to pull him away from the woman, Powell said.
“Dorton grabbed a fixed-blade knife from a sheath on his belt, and as Moran pulled him away, he struck (the woman) in the upper leg with the knife,” Powell said.
The knife allegedly inflicted a minor cut, he said.
Dorton then allegedly made threats, saying, “I’m above the law — I’m not afraid to show my reputation — I kill people,” according to Powell.
Dorton was arrested at his residence Tuesday and transported to Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.
While being interviewed, he allegedly told deputies, “If I had pulled a knife, something would have happened.”
But according to Powell, Dorton had not been informed of the knife allegations prior to making that statement.
Dorton, 42, was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, spousal abuse and making criminal threats and was released on $25,000 bail.
