5 inches of rain soak county
February 11, 2007
A winter storm pounded Nevada County over the weekend with more than 5 inches of rain leaving a wake of broken tree limbs in roadways, leaky roofs and flooded storm drains.
The rain came down hard Saturday afternoon and evening in Grass Valley as cars splashed their way through traffic and shoppers ran for cover. From Friday morning to Sunday morning, 5.14 inches of rainfall fell in Grass Valley, according to the National Weather Service.
Weather-related calls poured into the Grass Valley Police Department and Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. A large tree was reported in the roadway on Rough and Ready Highway Friday night, and Sunday morning there were complaints of flooded backyards and apartments.
Roofer Terry Matlock of Matlock Roofing worked Sunday cleaning out a backed up drain and said he has received a number of calls to fix leaky roofs.
Fresh snow fell at summit resorts, with 13 to 24 inches reported at Boreal, Soda Springs and Alpine Meadows between Friday and Sunday mornings.
The storm was warm at 32 degrees and was expected to get colder. The Auburn Ski Club canceled a children’s winter carnival on Saturday because of wet and windy conditions.
“They were concerned the kids would be too cold,” said Lucetta Swift, who works in the office at the cross country ski resort adjacent to Boreal.
The storm’s intensity tapered off Sunday after a brief hail storm and some blue skies and sunshine.
Today will remain partly cloudy with chances of rain tonight. Partly cloudy skies are expected to continue until Thursday night. Friday should be mostly sunny.
