October 12, 2012
Rachel Hastert, a resident of Grass Valley and an employee of Sierra Theaters in Grass Valley, was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the National Association of Theatre Owners of California/Nevada to be used for college expenses.
Hastert is the fifth of seven kids, born and raised in Grass Valley. She began working at Sutton Cinemas in May of 2008 and worked there for a little more than two years, plus summers and Christmas vacations ever since.
Hastert will be a junior at the University of California, Santa Cruz, this fall and is studying neuroscience with a minor in chemistry. She hopes to go to medical school or possibly grad school, but for now, she looks forward to studying abroad at the University of Cape Town in South Africa this spring.
Each year, the association awards up to 25 such scholarships to deserving employees of member theaters and qualifying dependents. The application process includes submission of an essay on an assigned topic, a personal statement and letters of recommendation. Eligible students must meet all of the eligibility requirements, which can be found in the Scholarship section of the association's website at http://www.NATOCalNev.org.
NATO of CA/NV is a trade organization comprising motion picture theatre companies representing more than 4,500 screens in California and Nevada.
