John Hardy Griffith died Oct. 21, 2011, after a short illness. He was 90.
A family remembrance service was held. He will be interred in Denver, Colo.
John was born to Melvin and Mabel Griffith May 19, 1921, in Homewood, Ill., where he grew up.
He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in November 1941 and became a highly decorated World War II fighter pilot. He also became a test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronau-tics, continuing to be one of the pilots of the Bell X-1. He was honored at the Lancaster, Calif., Aerospace Walk of Honor in 2006.
Following the war, he earned a degree in aeronautical engineering at Purdue University .
He leaves his wife, Shirley Patterson Griffith, Penn Valley; children, Lynn Manthei, Roberta E. Fisher, Richard C. Griffith and Jon Blakely Griffith; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, George Fenton Griffith; three stepchildren and their families; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
