Fun, timeless fashion abounds at Mill Street Clothing Co.

Mill Street Clothing Company has stood the test of time, much like the fashions that can be found within. For 26 years, the shop in the heart of downtown Grass Valley has been providing women of all ages with cute, comfortable clothing that looks and feels great on every body type.
The spacious women’s clothing specialty store has seen continued success thanks to owner Lisa Swarthout’s keen business sense. She regularly travels to trade shows and hand selects each item for the women of Nevada County, keeping our area’s unique flavor in mind as she eyes the options. “I search for styles that look good on all body types that are classic and timeless,” said Swarthout. “Anything too trendy is out.”
The clothing you find in Mill Street Clothing Company is fun, washable, and wearable. You won’t see everyone wearing the same thing you just bought, either, since Swarthout only gets four to six of each item. “Lisa has always been really good at plugging into the needs and preferences of our customers,” said manager Chris Adams. “She always considers Nevada County lifestyles and women’s body types.”
Making all women look and feel good in what they are wearing is the main goal of Mill Street Clothing Company, and so the store is filled with quality, versatile items that go up to size XL and 16. Women of any age will fall in love with something in the store, since there are hundreds of choices in the 3,000-square-foot space.
In preparation for winter, the store is packed with hundreds of sweaters and cold weather fashions, and at any time of the year you can find over forty styles of jeans to keep the theme of working with every body type. Much of the apparel can’t be found in department stores, as it tends to be geared more toward specialty retail stores in the Bay Area. Popular brands include Nomadic Traders, Tribal Sportswear, Heartstring, Habitat, Cut Loose, Chalet, Eileen Fisher, Woolrich and Jag Jeans.
“This is quality clothing for everyone; women of all ages find something to fall in love with here,” said Swarthout. “When you have a need for that basic quality item you can wear for years, come see us.”
Not only do you look good when you walk out of Mill Street Clothing Company, but you can feel good about contributing to the greater good with every purchase. A portion of everything you spend there is funneled back into the community, supporting many nonprofits. In 2015, Mill Street Clothing Company supported many local organizations including The Friendship Club, Hospitality House, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation and The Center for the Arts.
Mill Street Clothing Company is located at 117 Mill Street in downtown Grass Valley and is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday 12-4 p.m.
