Fire Safe Council gets two grants

The Fire Safe Council of Nevada County has landed two grants which will sustain its chipping program and create a fuel break in the Truckee area.

A $150,000 grant from the Bureau of Land Management will be used to buy a chipper, according to council Executive Director Joanne Drummond. That will allow the council to keep the program without grant funds in the future and inmate labor might do the free chipping of wood waste rural county residents gather, she said.

Another $104,000 from the U.S. Forest Service will be used along Interstate 80 by the Tahoe-Donner subdivision to create a two-mile by 300-foot fuel break, Drummond said.
