Brief History of The Union

The Union is is one of the oldest daily newspapers in California. It was founded in 1864, as the Civil War raged and people in Nevada County were divided. The Union made its stand clear: "For The Union, One and Inseparable." Those words have appeared on its front page every day since then.

Today, six days a week, more than 17,000 copies of The Union are distributed. Most of the readers of The Union live in western Nevada County, but some people who live as far away as the East Coast subscribe to keep in touch.

About 80 people work at The Union's office in the Glenbrook basin, making the newspaper one of the larger employers in the area.
