ERC set to start anew with search for director

A high-profile nonprofit recently beset by turbulence begins 2013 with a newly configured executive board responsible for finding a new leader.

The Nevada County Economic Resource Council convened its first meeting of 2013 with Robert Bergman, a Nevada City-based attorney and member of the city council, as the new chairman of the executive committee board.

Bergman will replace Kimberly Parker, who represents the Sierra Nevada Hospital Foundation on the board. Parker presided over a tumultuous 2012 for the ERC, which saw the executive committee hire a new executive director Jon Blinder and secure a much-coveted contract from Nevada County to enhance regional tourism.

Promptly thereafter, Parker accepted Blinder's resignation after he was arrested and charged with six felonies, including multiple charges of securities fraud for his alleged role in a hard-money lending operation.

Amid the turmoil, the organization has still managed to file progress reports with the county regarding its activity in attracting more tourists to the region.

Tim Corkins, the Chief Executive Officer of ZAP Manufacturing, has stepped in as the interim executive director at ERC and has helped launch a search for Blinder's replacement. Corkins said he has not applied to be the permanent executive director.

"I already have a job," he said.

Corkins said the organization originally identified 26 candidates, but the pool has been whittled down to nine. ERC staff will continue the process with the intent to carve out "a handful" of candidates to be interviewed over the next few days.

The ERC hopes to hire an executive director by February, Corkins said. Candidates from around the nation are being considered along with numerous local applicants.

In the second progress report filed in mid-December, Corkins said, which is being managed by Shannon and Jeff Pelline, continues to see an increase in visits. Most of those who go to the website are from Sacramento, Yuba City, Grass Valley, San Francisco and Los Angeles, the report states.

The ERC also hired a new front office administrator, Janet Alessandra.
