2 Smartsville cats mutilated, likely by BB gun

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident in which two cats from the Smartsville area were treated last week for injuries consistent with wounds from a BB or pellet gun. The animals survived, but both of them appeared to have been shot in or near one eye.

According to Dr. Tim Van Geem at the Mother Lode Veterinary Hospital in Grass Valley, both cats will be partially blind as a result of the mutilation. Further surgery may be necessary to remove each of the affected eyes, he said

“It’s disconcerting to see the same kind of injury in two cats from the same household,” Van Geem said.

The veterinarian did not disclose the identity of the cats’ owner, but sheriff’s activity logs indicate that the animals live at a residence on the 10000 block of Peardon Road.

According to Sheriff’s Sgt. Sam Brown, witness interviews indicated that a group of young children might be responsible. They reportedly threatened another juvenile, one of the owners of the animals, until an older brother came out of the home to intervene.

The suspects were described as a group of three to five children, ages 8 to 10, with brown and blond hair. One of them was wearing a red shirt.

Subsequent sightings of the suspects have not been reported, leading the authorities to think the children might have been visiting from out of the area over the holidays.

“It doesn’t sound like we’re going to have anything workable unless they come back again,” Brown said.

“The only way that we’re going to be able to make contact with the suspects is with more information or better tips.”

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging community members to report any additional information that could help positively identify a suspect or group of suspects. The Animal Control office can be reached at 530- 273-2179.
