8 arrested, 10 cited in Nevada County alcohol crackdown by ABC

A multi-agency effort Friday night aimed at alcohol-related crimes resulted in eight arrests and 10 citations.

Officers from Nevada County Sheriff’s Office and Grass Valley, Nevada City and Truckee police departments were out in force with agents from the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and probation officers to conduct “intensive alcohol enforcement,” said Sheriff Keith Royal.

Eight were arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public or driving under the influence, Royal said.

Ten people were cited for misdemeanors or infractions relating to providing alcohol to a minor, being a minor in possession of alcohol or having an open container, Royal said.

The operation focused on the downtown areas of Grass Valley, Truckee and Nevada City and was funded by an ABC grant. According to Royal, the enforcement action was planned for Halloween weekend because law enforcement typically sees increased alcohol consumption during that holiday.

One Nevada City man was arrested outside the Bonanza Market on Broad Street after he reportedly was observed by his probation officer at about 11 p.m. in the act of buying alcohol for a minor.

The probation officer, who was accompanied by a Nevada City Police officer, observed Samuel Stratton-Brooks exchanging money with and buying alcohol for a 19-year-old man, said Police Chief Scott Berry.

The teen was cited and released, Berry said.

Stratton-Brooks reportedly had a small amount of methamphetamine on his person.

He was booked into county jail on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, buying alcohol for a minor and violating probation. He was being held without bail.
