Grass Valley man arrested after police chase allegedly had drugs in car

A Grass Valley man was arrested after reportedly leading Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase down Rough and Ready Highway that ended when his vehicle drove over a spike strip.

A deputy had tried to make a traffic stop on Darryl Wayne Skelton, 45, after observing that the Mitsubishi he was driving did not have a front license plate, said Sheriff Keith Royal.

The deputy was in the area of Highway 20 and Rough and Ready Highway when Skelton drove by, going east on Rough and Ready Highway at about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Royal said.

Skelton reportedly was driving about 45 mph in a 25 mph zone at the time.

Instead of stopping when the deputy, who pulled in behind him, attempted a traffic stop, Skelton “took off” up Rough and Ready Highway toward Grass Valley, driving at speeds up to 90 mph, over the double yellow lines and through stop signs, Royal said.

Grass Valley Police officers were able to lay a spike strip down near Alta and West Main streets, which blew out Skelton’s tires.

“His car was totally disabled, but he kept trying to drive it,” Royal said. “He was refusing to show his hands despite repeated commands. Officers broke out his window with a baton, but he still refused to show his hands, so he was tased.”

Skelton then complied with officers’ directives, was taken out of the car and detained.

Deputies searched the vehicle and found “all kinds of drug paraphernalia,” Royal said, including unopened boxes of syringes and a syringe loaded with suspected methamphetamine. They also reportedly found a drug scale, packaging material, small ziplock baggies of meth and containers of marijuana and numerous cell phones and electronic devices.

Deputies located a license plate inside the vehicle that did not match the one plate found on the vehicle; Royal said an investigation into whether the car was stolen is ongoing.

Skelton was arrested on suspicion of possessing and transporting controlled substances for sale, evading a peace officer, driving on a suspended license, false registration on a vehicle, possessing drug paraphernalia and possessing a vehicle with an altered number. He was being held in county jail in lieu of $38,648 bail.
