Man linked to number of area burglaries

A local man allegedly confessed to a number of area burglaries after one victim found her gold watch for sale on eBay.

The woman, a resident of Paddock Lane off McCourtney Road, reported a burglary May 17 after she saw a truck leaving her home, according to dispatch reports. She told investigators that a gold watch and other jewelry had been stolen, said Nevada County Sheriff’s Det. Rob Bringolf.

The investigation got a break when the victim, who was researching the potential value of the timepiece, found a photo of her watch on eBay; the item was being sold by a jewelry store on Mill Street in Grass Valley.

“The owner of the store had gotten it the day of the burglary” and was able to identify the suspect, Bringolf said

The man, Thomas Floyd Johnson, 28, was on probation, so deputies went to his residence in the 13000 block of Brooks Road to conduct a probation search.

“They found most of the items stolen in that burglary,” Bringolf said.

Bringolf said he had been investigating a number of earlier burglaries off Lake Vera and You Bet roads and learned that Johnson had previously lived in both areas.

During questioning, Johnson allegedly admitted to “numerous” other burglaries. Bringolf would not provide specifics but noted that Johnson was being charged with eight counts of residential burglary, three counts of commercial burglary and three counts of possessing stolen property.

“We’re still investigating,” he said.

Johnson is currently being held without bail at Wayne Brown Correctional Facility. He was arraigned in Nevada County Superior Court May 21 and is set to enter a plea May 30.
