Second Sunday Cinema screens ‘Gasland’

What’s all the hype about “fracking?” The Second Sunday Cinema will present “Gasland” to shed more light on this issue beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday.

From the Sacramento Valley to Los Angeles County, the oil and gas industry has been fracking in California without clear regulatory oversight for many years. The Brown administration is fast-tracking new proposed regulations for California. These new regulations would exempt drilling companies from CEQA, impose a “Doctors Gag Order” and redefine “fresh water,” allowing the dumping of frack waste water into the Pacific Ocean, brackish delta waters and into deepwater aquifers. California will regret it if the drilling and fracking industry succeeds in extracting as much oil and gas as possible, as quickly as possible, from the Monterey Shale and other “tight” rock formations that lie beneath the state.

In the documentary film “Gasland,” viewers are taken to communities in Pennsylvania and in the Southwest where fracking has been going on for years. Hear from members of those communities who have been “fracked” just how safe and secure they feel in their homes now after the oil and gas industries arrived.

“Gasland” shows at the Unitarian Universalists Community of the Mountains, 246 Church St. in Grass Valley The public is invited to come and enjoy the film, and stay for the lively facilitated discussion that follows. Refreshments will be available. For information, contact the Peace Center at 530-265-0200 or visit the Peace Center’s website at http://ncpeace.org.

There is a suggested donation of $5-10 (no one turned away for lack of funds).

All proceeds pay expenses and programs of the Peace Center of Nevada County and the UUCM Social Action Committee.
