On the scene: Some great options for holiday cards

Some great options for holiday cards

Rumor has it that members of The Nevada County Composers Co-op were up bright and early Saturday morning, ad-libbing on a sidewalk in downtown Nevada City. The tourists were bug-eyed.

Joanna Newsom wowed the crowd, I'm told, at Music in the Mountains' Sunday concert. As one attendee put it: "I think she is a great role model for the younger music listener." Watching the career of this hometown talent will continue to be fun, I'm sure. Bet her family, friends and former teachers are proud of her.

During a recent NPR Marketplace report on the radio, I heard that there are 6 million bands on MySpace. Yikes. And have you seen Andy McKee, the No. 1 most downloaded artist in the world? The holidays are fast approaching. Want to buy cards for the holidays that support a cause? Click on to help out folks with diabetes. The dLife Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit, noncommercial and independent organization, said the e-mail I received.

But local artists, too, create lovely holiday cards. One such is Randy McMillen - very nice pencil drawings of Santa that he turns into prints, as well. His work has been shown at the Louvre Gallery in Grass Valley. E-mail him at to know more.

Did you know that the Kiwanis Beach Party (Hawaiian motif) auction to benefit school clothes and supplies for underprivileged children takes place at Miners Foundry Friday, 6-9 p.m.? Tickets are $20.

Check out instructions in the calendar section of this issue on how to submit listings for that section. For stories, please ask for the Prospector guidelines.
