Alleged drunken driver arrested in injury crash

A Grass Valley man reportedly was driving drunk when he lost control of his Ford Expedition and crashed into a Lexus, seriously injuring its passenger, Sunday night.

Peter Mallory, 29, was driving westbound on Highway 20 at the Broad Street overcrossing at about 8:45 p.m., and multiple witnesses reported he was driving recklessly and at high speeds, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Greg Tassone.

Mallory reportedly lost control of his Expedition, fishtailing between both lanes as he approached the Broad Street onramp and sideswiping a Lexus being driven by David Buchman, 65, of Nevada City.

The impact sent Buchman’s car into the bridge rail of the Deer Creek overcrossing. Mallory’s Expedition then veered into the center median, going airborne, and overturning as it rolled in the eastbound lanes of the highway, Tassone said.

The Expedition finally came to rest at the Broad Street off-ramp, Tassone said. Mallory was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated.

“He was refusing treatment and was uncooperative,” Tassone said.

Buchman sustained only minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene. His passenger, Kathleen Woodson, 66, of Nevada City, sustained substantial injuries to her torso, lungs and ribs, and was flown by helicopter to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

She was listed in fair condition as of Monday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Mallory was transported to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured right wrist.

He was subsequently arrested and booked into county jail on suspicion of driving under the influence and causing great bodily injury. He was being held in lieu of $75,000 bail.

Traffic was diverted for about an hour, Tassone said, with eastbound traffic diverted to Broad Street and one westbound lane remaining open.
