Top economist to speak at ERC summit
March 19, 2017
Christopher Thornberg, founding partner of Beacon Economics, LLC and widely considered to be one of the nation's leading economists, is keynote speaker for Nevada County's 2017 Economic Development Summit.
The summit, organized by the Nevada County Economic Resource Council, will be May 18. Tickets and sponsorships are now available.
The summit itself will be 1:30-4:30 p.m. at The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley. It will be followed by a separate VIP Dinner from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at The Foothills Event Center.
"This is the once-a-year 'can't miss' event for business, civic, technology, education and other community stakeholders in the region that will provide vital information regarding the state of our economy and the future of our community," said ERC Executive Director Jon Gregory. "Our ERC Special Events Task Force for the Summit, co-chaired by Danielle Scallin and Sara Christiansen of Courtyard Suites in Grass Valley, Steve Reynolds with APi-marketing, and Mary Jean (MJ) Heltsley, marketing contributor, has put together a compelling program of impressive speakers and practical information relevant to anyone who lives, works or owns a business in Nevada County."
In addition to his post at Beacon, Thornberg is director of the Center for Economic Forecasting and Development at UC Riverside's School of Business Administration and an Adjunct Professor at the School.
Thornberg's comments, "State of the Economy," are expected to complement the theme of the summit: "Reaching Common Goals."
"This year, we wanted to design the summit in a manner that offers attendees an opportunity to share their insights and perspective on the ERC's new 2017-18 Economic Development Strategic Plan, which will be presented at the Summit," said Summit Co-Chair Danielle Scallin.
An expert in economic forecasting, regional economics, labor markets, economic policy, and industry and real estate analysis, Thornberg was one of the earliest and most adamant predictors of the sub-prime mortgage collapse and of the global economic recession that followed. A well-known commentator, he has appeared on CNN and NPR and is regularly quoted in major national dailies including the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. In 2015, Dr. Thornberg was named to California State Treasurer John Chiang's Council of Economic Advisors. He also serves on the advisory boards of Paulson & Co. Inc., one of Wall Street's leading hedge funds, and of the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce, Southern California's largest not-for-profit business federation.
— Presentation and initial public release of the Nevada County Economic Resource Council's 2017-18 economic development strategic plan. The plan, called "Reaching Common Goals", will shed light on key county-wide economic development issues and opportunities that will become a top priority focus of NCERC (and other stakeholder groups) over the next 24 months. Attendees will have the opportunity to share their inputs to the plan as part of the Summit, which will then be incorporated into an updated, final version of the plan.
—Business and VR Vignettes. Throughout the summit a handful of local businesses who've made exciting progress in 2016-17 will share brief company overviews and highlights of their recent business accomplishments. As an exciting twist, included will be some compelling companies visiting Nevada County who will share their innovations in Virtual Reality, which is a key industry segment that is one focus of NCERC.
— VIP Dinner – A Community Conversation. In addition, a special post-summit VIP dinner (separate ticket required) will feature a moderated community conversation with a panel of experts who will share their perspectives on the top priority issues and opportunities included in the NCERC 2017-18 Strategic Plan.
