MacDonald: Find your WAY
November 11, 2013
It's time to get unstuck and finish your year strong. Often toward the end of the year, I find I become more aware of many projects I still have open. With the holidays in view and the awareness that year end is just around the corner, I have a heightened sense of what is not completed yet. Raise your hand if that is true for you.
Don't despair. There is a way to get it done in time. All you need to do is find your WAY.
WAY stands for Why – Actions – Yes to Yourself
W – Why: One of the biggest reasons people get stuck or procrastinate is they don't have a big enough "Why" associated to the completion of the project. When we are clear on why we must do something, how doing it will benefit us by either getting our needs met or honoring our values, we will do what must be done. To the contrary, if the task or project at hand does not honor our values or help us get our needs met, we have a tendency to redirect our energy and focus elsewhere.
Get clear on why you must complete the project. Look for how completing it will honor your values and serve your needs.
A – Actions: What are the next best actions (nba) that will lead to the completion of your project. Write them out. Often people get stuck simply because they don't consciously know what the next step is to completing the project or they are missing some sort of data points. Perhaps the nba is simply getting more data.
Recommended Stories For You
Writing out your list of nba's may reveal some steps you are not clear on how to execute. That is good intel to have as it will let you know what you need to learn or get help with to move on to completion.
Focus on the nba and do it. Then focus on the nba and do it and so on.
Y – Yes to yourself: It's not who you think you are that may be holding you back. It's who you think you're not. Drop the story of you're not enough. Reclaim your power right now! You can learn and do anything if you put your mind to it.
The fact that at 7 months old you learned the sound of the word "nose" means that bump on your face and you learned to control the muscles in your chubby little hand to touch your nose when someone asked you, "Where's your nose?" proves my point.
Take a minute and reflect on all that you have learned to perform since then. Yes, you can learn anything.
Get clear on your "Why," identify your nba's and take action, and say Yes to Yourself. You deserve it. Good luck in completing your projects.
Make it up, make it fun and make it happen!
