Dress for success

For those with a desire to offer their passion to the world, the opportunity to open a store is a dream come true.
Such was the case for Gaylene Miller, who opened her fabric store 14 years ago and recently moved locations and expanded her selection of bridal wear.
"I wanted more exposure on my wedding apparel because I have wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses, and I wanted to move into a bigger spot, and I figured downtown would be a good spot," Miller said.
Miller learned to sew as a young child and worked at a fabric store in high school, which nourished her love for fabric and made her job feel less like work and more like enjoyment. The craft market is not only for the older population, Miller said, but has expanded to younger crowds as well.
"They're wanting to learn how to sew and create and make their own clothing," Miller said.
The store has expanded to offer a wider variety of bridal apparel, Miller said, and will also provide alterations, something she said can make for a collaborative effort with nearby apparel stores.
"Several of the stores we've talked to are excited because of alterations," Miller said. "What I'm expanding into is mainly costuming, bridal fabrics, because there's lots of theater around town. We also have home decor and novelty fabrics. Just fun stuff."
Fabric Boutique and Bridal also offers dresses for formal occasions and even provides a tracking system so the dreaded image of wearing the same dress as another person at the prom or party is diminished.
"I want the exposure on my wedding attire, since we're also bringing in prom dresses and things," Miller said. "I will bring in several different styles, but we're going to monitor so the girls don't get the same dresses."
Miller also made a point to offer the more popular bridal brands.
"I am carrying some of the top line designers — Alfred Angelo, Jordan, Mary's Bridal," Miller said. "Why go down to Sacramento when you can shop locally around here?"
Though the weeks-long process of changing locations may have been taxing at times, Miller is optimistic about the impact moving into a better location will bring.
"We've never been closed this long, and it's been a lot of work, but I think it'll be worth it."
