Two downtown Nevada City businesses will be joining forces in February. The Parlour, a vintage clothing boutique on Commercial Street, is relocating to Neva Co’s more visible location at 400 Broad St. Enid and Edgar, another vintage clothing boutique on Spring Street, will be moving into the retail location that The Parlour is vacating.
“Our biggest reason is to have a partner to bounce ideas off of, and to cut down costs. We’re going to be saving a lot,” said Shawna James, The Parlour’s owner. “We kept it a secret until after the holidays, but we’ve had this in the works for a while.”
James anticipates a boost in foot traffic at the new location.
“Commercial Street’s great, and I love it, but I’m far enough down that people don’t really come through,” she said. “I really want to get up to the main street, so this was a no-brainer for me.”
James says that in addition to reducing her shop’s monthly overhead and increasing access to customers, the partnership will allow her to work just three days a week. She plans to use some of that time off for sewing and craft projects.
Cynthia Levesque, Neva Co’s owner, said she looks forward to spending more time with her loved ones.
“I have a family and a baby on the way,” Levesque said. “I love what I’m doing here, and I would never want to give this up, but after a year and a half of being here every day, it’s been hard. The opportunity to have our family time — how could I say no to that?”
Neva Co specializes in recycled, upcycled and handmade local goods. Levesque expects that The Parlour’s vintage clothing will complement the inventory she already has available.
“It’s kind of a perfect combination,” she added. “We’re excited to become business partners.”
Levesque organizes Nevada City’s monthly First Friday Art Walk, which runs April to November and pairs downtown businesses with featured artists for an evening.
“I’m looking forward to having more time to organize that,” Levesque added.
Both stores will be closed from Jan. 26 to Feb. 7. After that, the community is invited to a grand reopening celebration of The Parlour at Neva Co, which will involve Valentine’s Day discounts and product demos from local makers.
