Overwhelm was the common theme this week when I asked my clients how they were doing. There was more to do than usual and more ambiguity layered upon all there was to be done. The most creative way I heard it described was, “I am up to my eyeballs in opportunity,” as one of my long-term clients put it. I asked another and she replied that she was simply stuck and didn’t know what to do next. When I dug a bit deeper with each of them, it turns out they were both sharing very similar experiences. They just happened to have very different ways of processing what was going on.
The client who was gaining traction toward goals had a different strategy for how he was dealing with the situation at hand. He was more clear. Here are five steps he was employing that helped him stay on track.
These same five steps helped the woman who was experiencing being stuck get unstuck and back on track.
C - Curiosity – Be curious about what is really possible for what you are trying to accomplish. If you could wave a magic wand and have it turn out however you wanted, what would that be like?
L- Let go – Let go of what you think you know. Often it is our thinking that holds us back.
We tend to believe we are our thoughts rather than recognizing we simply have thoughts.
Many of the thoughts we have on a repetitive basis are not even true or accurate. They are made-up patterns that may be keeping us trapped or stuck in living a life of mediocrity.
E – Evaluate and expand your base of knowledge. Increase your wisdom and capacity.
Find people who are achieving what you want to achieve. Model their behavior. Read biographies. Search the web.
A-Action – Take an action that moves you in the direction of your desires. Progress is the key. We can only progress one step at a time. Based on your evaluation, notice what the best next step is and take it. Plan from where you are, not from where you think you should be.
Too often people get caught up in how many steps there are and never take the first step. Step out, even if it is the wrong one. So what? You can always adjust.
R – Reflect and receive. Open your eyes and notice the good that is actually showing up in your world.
Much of the time people tend to focus on what they don’t have, what is not going to their liking or what they fear may go wrong. Stop it!
Develop the habit of appreciating what you do have, what is or can be working in your life and what could go right. What you focus on expands. Be mindful on what you place your focus on.
Make it up, make it fun and make it happen!
