A “RUT” is something we experience when we have Reoccurring Un-empowering Thoughts. When we believe those thoughts to be true, we experience corresponding emotions. Our actions or inactions are driven by those emotions, and we end up with a result that mirrors the seminal thought. The RUT begins to form as we confirm the thought over and over, which leads to the results that we then think and experience as our life being in a RUT.
The easiest way to recognize a RUT is to notice that the thoughts will be in the form of a justification of a situation, a blaming of others, or a shaming of self. It also, will most likely contain a universal component such as all, every, never, none or always. Here are some examples:
I never get a break;
My employees never get the work done correctly;
Customers are so demanding;
It’s a tough economy.
As these thoughts repeat in our mind we start to form a filter based on those thoughts and start to only see the evidence to support those un-empowering thoughts and actually form a scotoma or blind spot to any data to the contrary.
Next time you have a RUT, ask yourself if it is really and absolutely true. Nine out of 10 times, it isn’t really absolutely true. It can be disputed. Your job is to dispute it and replace it with a Grateful Empowering Thought (GET).
The mind can only focus on one thought at a time. If you just try to eliminate the RUT, it will fill back in with the RUT. That is because nature abhors a vacuum. However, if you have a GET at the ready to put in the place of the removed RUT, you can start to reverse the trend and move out of your RUT and get back on track.
