A Citrus Heights man was killed when a woman driving a motorhome collided with his motorcycle Sunday afternoon.
The 35-year-old man, who has been identified as Matthew Duensing, was driving his 1999 Harley Davidson northbound on Highway 49 at about 4:15 p.m. when the accident occurred, said California Highway Patrol Officer Greg Tassone.
A woman, identified as Victoria Smith, 58, of Gardnerville, Nev., was parked on the right shoulder of the highway at Sharonjack Road in a 2008 Road Trek motorhome.
Smith was about to make a U-turn to head south on the highway, Tassone said.
She reportedly checked her mirrors and saw the motorcycle but told officers she believed she had time to make the U-turn.
Smith turned directly into the path of the motorcycle. Duensing swerved to the left in an attempt to avoid her but collided with the left front tire.
He was thrown from his motorcycle and landed in front of the motorhome, Tassone said.
An off-duty firefighter arrived at the scene moments after the collision and found Duensing without a pulse, Tassone said. He began CPR, but Duensing was pronounced dead by paramedics who arrived at the scene shortly thereafter.
According to Tassone, Duensing was wearing a helmet that was not approved for motorcycles. The accident remains under investigation.
