For those in need of a scintillating piece of decoration, Nevada City Crystal and Glass is celebrating its 30th anniversary through the weekend.
The sale will extend through Sunday and offers 30 percent off everything in the store, except consigned items.
“There’s been a good response so far,” said store owner Dave Iorns. “People have come in that have said they never would have come in because they thought it was too expensive, but it isn’t, and they’ve been pleased so far.”
The store was opened by Iorns’ father-in-law, Peter Ray, in 1983.
“People come to Grass Valley and Nevada City to look for something different, and it seemed like there was nothing in town that filled this niche of crystal,” Iorns said.
The shop used to carry more traditional crystal that was clear and cut into multiple shapes, until Iorns purchased the business in 2003 and modernized the merchandise.
“I brought in color and different glass and crystal to appeal to the more contemporary generations,” he said.
Iorns said he enjoys purchasing items for the store that people will enjoy, along with his ability to give exposure to artists.
“I do enjoy ordering new things because we have a lot of repeat business and I don’t want them to have to come into the store and there be the same old stuff that was here four months ago,” he said. “I also enjoy that I have several artists that are local whom I like to feature. I feel like I’m doing them a service in that they don’t necessarily have a storefront or ability to show their product, and that helps me in that I have all new local artwork that people can enjoy.”
Though artists can display their items during seasonal fairs and events, having a consistent presence in a store makes it easier for them to survive financially.
“It’s tough to have a little canopy at those events and wait for people to walk by,” Iorns said. “I like that I feel like that’s sort of giving back to the community in a small way.”
