Meet your merchant: Bloom La Boutique Salon

Few find their calling early in life, so Tina Sanson and Stacy Shade count themselves among the lucky ones. The pair met 14 years ago at a Nevada City salon where both worked as hair stylists. Sanson said she loved the fact that she met new people on a regular basis, that every day was different. Shade enjoyed the creativity required when it comes to working with hair and color, as well as the joy of helping people feel better about themselves.

But after eight years of working in somebody else’s salon, the friends decided to take a leap of faith and open their own business.

“It was time for a change,” said Sanson. “We were ready to branch out on our own.”

In May of 2008, Shade and Sanson opened Bloom La Boutique Salon. An impressive number of clients followed them, along with longtime co-worker and stylist Mary Rowe-Baer. They’ve never looked back.

Today, the Grass Valley salon boasts a total of five stylists, including the initial three, Susan Straub and newcomer Alli Albright.

The team’s mission, said Shade, is to provide each customer with undivided, personal attention and respect while maintaining the staff’s passion for the art of hair design, color and makeup. The staff, she said, recognizes the importance of the client-stylist relationship and the need for open communication.

“We’re like a family,” said Sanson. “We have a very innovate staff. We love to share ideas that benefit our clients.”

While customers range in age from toddlers to seniors, Sanson still has some clients who came to her when she began her career 18 years ago. And as any business owner will attest to, word of mouth is the best advertising.

While the salon specializes in hair cutting and color, they also offer perms, “updos,” hair extensions, deep conditioning and a keratin complex smoothing treatment. Other services include lip, brow and face waxing, as well as lash and brow tinting. Conveniently, an aesthetician works upstairs, augmenting the services offered at the salon.

Bloom also carries several favorite skin and make-up lines, all of which come with punch-card discounts and rewards for regular customers.

They are one of the biggest suppliers of Jane Iredale cruelty-free mineral make-up in town. Because of the popularity of the line, Bloom maintains a large inventory, said Sanson, in addition to hosting regular events with visiting make-up artists. They also carry Dahliana, a natural skin care line, as well as brushes and Privé apothecary hair care products. In fact, the team at Bloom recently trained with representatives of Privé and worked back stage during L.A. Fashion Week in March.

In short, team members at Bloom La Boutique Salon say they love what they do.

“We love the independence of owning our business and we love working with people you can trust,” said Shade. “But most of all we love our clients, and we’re proud to have so many coming back to us year after year.”
