June 16, 2014
Everyone is invited to share their time and talents with Nevada County nonprofits, public agencies, and schools. Over 75 local agencies need your help. View more volunteer opportunities at http://www.volunteernevadacounty.org and give us a call at 530-271-0255. Here is a sampling of what is available:
Use your leadership skills to help veterans
Welcome Home Vets creates a healing community where veterans, active duty military and their families feel understood and valued. They are currently in need of an Administrative Services Team Coordinator. This position coordinates many different office functions including human resources, volunteer services, finance, data reporting and media services. Must have excellent communication skills and be computer literate.
Special event help
The Bear Yuba Land Trust is looking for volunteers to help them with their summer events. BYLT has built 22 miles of community trails and created about 250 acres of publicly accessible open space. Help support this great organization. Whether your interests lie in set up, security, serving food, directing traffic or clean up; the need is great. Events are happening July 5, July 27, August 24 and September 28.
Help Feed the Children
During the summer while school is out of session, children living in low-income homes need your help. This is a wonderful program where you get to interact with these fun-loving children and help feed them for the summer months. The Friday Grass Valley route needs to be filled immediately. Please call the Food Bank at 530-272-3796.
Our four-legged friends need your retail experience
Sammie’s Nifty Thrift Shop needs your help to organize, price and/or sell their top quality donated merchandise. All proceeds go to Sammie’s Friends, a non-profit organization that provides medical care for animals at the Nevada County animal shelter. You must be able to stand for a three and a half hour shift. Volunteers are needed Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 to 5 p.m.
Friendly visitor volunteers
As a volunteer with the Friendly Visitor program you can make a profound and personal difference in the life of a senior or person with a disability. You need no special expertise. You will be asked to make a weekly visit of one or two hours, and receive ongoing training and guidance.
Just ‘fix it’
If you have experience with home maintenance, repairs, and construction, take some time to help our senior citizens with “Fix-It.” Good communications skills and time management is key! It is also important to have the ability to work with seniors, people with disabilities, and fellow volunteers on group projects. Handy? Please give RSVP a call.
‘I’ve been working on the railroad…’
Share your love of railroads and give informative talks regarding Nevada County history as a docent for the railroad museum in Nevada City. Your assistance is needed once a week for three to six hour shifts. Training is provided. Assistance in the gift shop is also needed.
Reclaim, revive, renew!
Do you have retail sales experience? Women of Worth is looking for multiple volunteers to organize, decorate, cashier, and do some lifting as either salespersons or back room staff. WOW assists families in crisis and victims of domestic violence. Help rebuild lives while using your retail skills.
North star mining museum
This Grass Valley museum is a real hidden treasure with numerous hands-on exhibits and an extensive collection of Pelton Water Wheels. Docents are needed to guide visitors through the museum and give an informational talk on its content. Training and support is provided. Assistance in the gift shop is also needed. Volunteers are needed one day a week; 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Help keep our community safe
The Grass Valley Police Department would like your help with traffic and crowd control at special events. Volunteers are also needed for car and foot patrol. A department background investigation must be completed prior to volunteering.
Meals On Wheels’ drivers
If you enjoy helping seniors, and can follow written and visual driving directions, the Home Delivered Meals program needs your help. Two and one half hours once a week is all it takes to provide needed nourishment and care. Drivers are needed for routes on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
For persons 55 and over, accident, liability, and excess auto insurance are provided and limited mileage reimbursement is available. If you are interested in any of the positions, e-mail us at email@example.com, visit our office in Grass Valley, or call weekdays 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 530-271-0255. RSVP is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service and sponsored locally by the Area 4 Agency on Aging.
