St. Canice, Nevada City
The Roman Catholic Church liturgical year consists of two times: Strong time and Ordinary time. The strong times are “ Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter” during which a particular mystery of salvation is celebrated. Ordinary Time, in turn, does not hold any particular mystery, but rather the same mystery of CHRIST in its fullness. St. Canice is observing Lent, which is the traditional purpose for the believer through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving, and self-denial for its institutional purpose in heightening its annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death, burial and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Bible when Jesus is crucified on Good Friday, which then culminates in the celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. During Lent the Stations of the Cross, a devotional commemoration of Christ’s carrying the Cross and of his execution, will be observed at our Parish of St. Canice, Nevada City, on each Friday at noon. Lent is traditionally described as lasting for 40 days, in commemoration of the 40 days which, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, where he endured temptation by the Devil. The beginning of Lent began Ash Wednesday March 5. Please come to observe with us in this the Season of Lent – Daily Masses 7:30 a.m., Saturday 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 8, 9 and 11 a.m.
