Weekend fire in historic downtown Colfax contained

An alliance of wide-ranging fire agencies prevented a Colfax business blaze from engulfing the old mining town’s historic downtown buildings over the weekend.

Patrons at a downtown bar reported the smell of smoke at approximately 10:30 p.m. Saturday. Both Colfax’s fire department and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection responded to the scene and discovered a basement fire at 38 Main Street, reportedly emanating from beneath The Kitchen Garden, a restaurant.

When CalFire’s battalion chief discovered that the businesses had connected basements, he called in backup. Fire departments that responded included Auburn, Higgins, Grass Valley, Peardale-Chicago Park, Placer County, Ophir Hills and Nevada County Consolidated Fire District, according to CalFire and on-scene reports.

While the responding crews contained the blaze by 10:44 p.m., crews remained on scene until 4:21 a.m. Sunday, according to CalFire’s incident report.

No injuries were reported, The extent of the damage was not determined as of Sunday and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, CalFire reported.
