Wes and Lark (Kent) Zachary of Nevada City celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Aug. 24, 2013. The couple was married in Tulare, Calif., in 1963.
Lark worked for 28 years at Seven Hills School, 18 years as a sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teacher, as well as 10 years as principal. She is a charter member of Soroptimist International of the Sierra Foothills and just completed her fourth term as president.
Wes graduated from Fresno State University in 1967 and began working as a civil engineer in the Santa Cruz County Department of Public Works. After six years in Santa Cruz, he applied for a position in Nevada County and was hired into the Public Works Department, where he served for 20 years.
He was promoted to Director of Public Works and later to the Director of Transportation, where he served until his retirement. Wes is a former member of Rotary International, Lions, and currently is a member of Elks. He belongs of the Grass Valley Sportsmen’s Club and served as their president in 1999.
He is a member of the Native Son’s of the Golden West and has served on the board of the Law Enforcement and Fire Protection Council. He currently represents District 4 on the Fish and Wildlife Commission in Nevada County. Upon retirement, Wes and Lark have traveled to Alaska, Italy, England, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Figi and Hawaii. They have circled the United States several times and enjoyed seeing the East Coast but are always happy to return to Nevada City.
The couple has three children, Mike Zachary of Grass Valley, David Zachary of Carnelian Bay and Beth Carli of Ryde, Calif., and five grandchildren.
