Behind the ideas and efforts toward building a better world, volunteers fuel a movement of compassion and connection. You can make a difference by volunteering right here in your community.

Everyone is invited to share their time and talents with Nevada County nonprofits, public agencies and schools. For persons 55 and over, accident, liability and excess auto insurance are provided and limited mileage reimbursement is available.

Immunization fair assistant

Volunteers are needed to help with back-to-school immunization events in August, Flue shot clinics are held in the fall and immunization clinics are held throughout the year. Help attendees fill out forms, take payments and provide assistance so that the events run smoothly. Prior medical knowledge is helpful, however, training is provided by the county’s public health department. Some knowledge of Spanish would also be helpful.

Starry, Starry Nights!

Help support the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Foundation at its annual Starry, Starry Nights gala. This is a summer evening event held at the Empire Mine on Saturday, July 20, from 3:45 to 11:00 p.m. Volunteers will be plating and serving food and assisting with clean up at the end of the event.

Plan to be on your feet for up to eight hours in a fast-paced environment. Call RSVP for more details.

Child development caregiver

Volunteer once a week for a three-hour shift at Community Recovery Resources in the Child Development Center assisting staff with feeding, rocking, reading and singing to infants and toddlers. Skills required: Be able to carry infants and toddlers, be patient and calm and be willing to work as a team member. Call RSVP for more information.

Workplace mentor

Assist and coach previously unemployed individuals to arrive on time at their job and to develop a successful work ethic.

This is a supported employment program through CoLiving Network, whose mission includes a multifaceted approach to ending homelessness by combining coaching with safe housing and work opportunities.

HelpLine information and assistance

Answer phones and give out health and social service referrals for Nevada County. Computer skills are needed, however ongoing training and support is provided. HelpLine is a wonderful resource staffed daily by volunteers.

One opening is available: Friday mornings from 9-12 p.m.

Museum gift shop attendants and museum docents

The NorthStar Mining Museum in Grass Valley is a local treasure! Several volunteers are needed to help with staffing the new gift shop during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday

This position is well suited for someone who enjoys sharing our local history with visitors, has a pleasant manner and a talent for sales and organizing gift shop displays. Docents are also needed to assist visitors to our area to learn about rich cultural heritage. Training is provided.

Coordinators needed for animal rescue group

A last-chance animal rescue nonprofit would love assistance with the coordination of volunteers. The interest and willingness to work with people who want to help animals is the basic requirement. Some office time and computer skills are helpful. A second coordinator is needed to help organize fundraising events. Some experience in putting on events and fundraising are the skills needed for this important volunteer job. This is a 100 percent volunteer organization doing valuable work in our community for our homeless animals.

Help make history come to life

The Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum is looking for volunteers to help at its wonderful museum in Nevada City. The museum is happily growing and with more volunteers will be able to keep the museum open more days per week. There are a number of ways to help: gift shop volunteer, museum docent, special events coordinator and more. This is a great group of dedicated volunteers that help others learn about our rich history and cultural heritage in Nevada County.

Be an advocate for patients’ rights

Ombudsman Services of Northern California needs volunteers who are dedicated to advocating for the rights of residents in long-term care facilities. Excellent training and ongoing education and support provided. Contact RSVP for more information.

Is there a “thrifter” in your family?

Send them out to volunteer at their favorite shop! Cancer Aid, Hospice, AnimalSave and other local thrift stores are in need of volunteers to assist with sorting and pricing merchandise, restocking, cashiering, small electronics repairs and more. Shifts are mornings or afternoons Monday through Friday, four hours weekly. Volunteering ensures that all contributions go directly back to the community to support the nonprofits.

Hospice helpers

Do you have skills and time to share with patients and families? There are many ways to get involved: office and clerical, gift and thrift volunteer, musician, massage therapy, compassionate care home hospitality and more. Training dates are: Sept 16, 18, 23 and 25. Call RSVP for details.

Partners in English Language Learning

PIELL has a two-day tutor training scheduled for Sept. 21 and 28. It is not necessary to have teaching or bilingual skills. Volunteer tutors meet with a learner one to two hours per week and should plan to commit to at least a year of tutoring once matched with an adult learner.

Compassionate hospital volunteers

The hospital auxiliary is looking for caring, dependable volunteers to join the organization. There are many interesting volunteer positions available, such as gift shop, cancer center, emergency department, diagnostic imaging, main lobby, nursing floor and more.
