Summit Orthopedic Specialists bring expertise to Grass Valley

A Carmichael-based full-spectrum orthopedic surgery group has expanded into Grass Valley to help fill what they see as a growing need for orthopedic and sports medicine care in western Nevada County.

A spokesperson for Summit Orthopedic Specialists states that the group will now offer a wide range of services at their new location, including care for arthritis, concussions, hand and wrist problems, hip and knee problems, limb preservation, neck and back issues, osteoporosis, pediatrics, shoulder care, trauma, and sports injuries.

The group embraces the latest non-surgical treatments and minimally invasive surgical techniques, she added.

Summit began in Carmichael about three decades ago under the name of Northern California Orthopedic Centers. It now includes four orthopedic surgeons who will rotate days in the Grass Valley office and perform surgeries at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital (SNMH) until a new, full-time surgeon can be hired. After that, the Carmichael-based surgeons will visit the Grass Valley location regularly to provide care in their individual areas of expertise, such as sports medicine, hip arthroscopy, and a new resurfacing technique used in hip and knee arthritis. They will also staff the Grass Valley office with a full-time physician assistant.

“We are very excited about the opening of our office,” said Dr. Paul M. Sasaura, president at Summit Orthopedic Specialists. “The new office gives patients in Grass Valley and surrounding communities a convenient location to receive comprehensive, high-quality orthopedic care. We’ve been providing state-of-the-art care to patients with musculoskeletal problems for nearly 30 years in our Carmichael office and will offer that same level of care in Grass Valley.”

Dr. Sasaura noted that their practice includes an orthopedic urgent care clinic for walk-in or same-day appointments for patients with acute injuries, as a time-saving alternative to a hospital emergency room visit.

He said Grass Valley was selected for their expansion because it has a large population of senior citizens needing joint care, a large segment of active adults and youths partaking in regional recreational opportunities that need sports medicine care, and because of an increased need based on retirement, relocation, and changes in practices among local orthopedic surgeons.

“We are very pleased to add this group of excellent physicians and their experienced staff to our community,” Katherine Medeiros, president and chief executive officer at SNMH, she said, “and we look forward to joining forces to provide even better care to patients.”

Dr. Brian Evans, vice president for medical affairs at the hospital, was equally enthusiastic about the group’s move to Grass Valley.

“Summit is a well-respected group of surgeons who have a reputation for excellence and putting their patients’ needs first. They bring a wide range of expertise in all areas of orthopedic surgery, including joint replacement, arthroscopy, trauma, sports medicine, and pediatric orthopedics. We are truly grateful that they have brought their experience, skill, and compassionate care to us.”

The group includes:

Dr. Sasaura, who works in all aspects of orthopedic and sports medicine with special interests in orthopedic trauma and joint reconstruction. He was the first surgeon in the Sacramento region to perform MAKOplasty partial knee resurfacing, and was one of the first to do computer-assisted total joint replacement.

Dr. Robert L. Cameto, a group founder, is board certified and works in all aspects of orthopedic care to help patients return to their normal activities.

Dr. Scott Fujii is fellowship trained and specializes in state-of-the-art diagnostic techniques and treatments, with a specialty in sports medicine. He has worked with the San Francisco 49ers, the San Francisco Giants, and several university sports programs.

Dr. Hunter S. Greene specializes in adult and pediatric sports medicine, and is trained in hip arthroscopy, a minimally invasive method of diagnosing and treating a range of hip conditions.

All physicians providing care for patients at SNMH are members of the medical staff and are independent practitioners, not employees of the hospital.
