A Chicago Park woman ended up in jail after her two boys, aged 3 and 6, were found walking down the highway at close to midnight Friday.
A man called 911 at 11:26 p.m. to report that he was out with the two children, who were found walking on Highway 174 near Talking Pines Road with no shoes on. A woman had also pulled over and the boys were getting in her vehicle to get out of the cold, according to dispatch reports.
Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies responded and located the mother at a residence in the 17000 block of Maple Way, about a quarter-mile away.
“They asked her if she knew where her children were, and she said she did not,” said Sgt. Justin Martin. “She said the baby sitter was supposed to be watching them.”
The mother, identified as Lara Lee Bradford, 43, said she did not know where the baby sitter was, Martin said.
The deputies reportedly smelled a strong odor of alcohol on Bradford’s breath, and she told them she had just returned from driving to Colfax to purchase alcohol at a store.
Bradford was booked into county jail on suspicion of child endangerment, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent, driving on a suspended license and committing a third DUI offense within 10 years. She was being held in lieu of $46,868 bail.
The boys were turned over to Child Protective Services, according to dispatch reports.
