With its exterior wood beams and snow-covered roof, this Schaffer’s Mill house might look like just another home, but it’s not.
It is the 2014 HGTV Dream Home, which will be given away to a lucky person.
“We’re creating this fantasy for someone, and you certainly hope it lives up to that,” said Linda Woodrum, lead interior designer for the house.
With architecture described as “new mountain,” the fully furnished, 3,200-square-foot house incorporates some modern touches with its traditional mountain design.
“We didn’t want to build the log cabin that you’ve been seeing forever or the traditional shingle-styled house,” Woodrum said.
“We wanted to take it and kind of mix it up a little — give it a little bit more energy, surprise.”
A distinguishing feature within the two-wing, open-floor-plan house is its many windows, which help bring the outdoors in.
“That’s what this whole area is about,” Woodrum said. “People come here because it’s so magnificent, and they want to experience the outside.”
The three-bedroom, three and a half-bathroom house sits directly on Schaffer’s Mill Club golf course, nestled among evergreen trees. Nearby are downtown Truckee, the Truckee River and Lake Tahoe.
“‘HGTV Dream Home’ is one of the most successful programs HGTV has, and there’s tens of millions of people who pay attention to it,” said John Marlin, founder of the Marlin Atlantis Group, which owns Schaffer’s Mill.
“That kind of attention to Schaffer’s Mill can’t be anything but very helpful and fantastic.”
Entries for the HGTV Dream Home will be accepted from 6 a.m., Dec. 27, to 3 p.m., Feb. 14. People can enter online twice a day: once at HGTV.com and once at FrontDoor.com. The winner will be selected at random in March.
In addition to winning a home, this year’s winner will receive a new GMC vehicle and $250,000 in cash — a prize package valued at nearly $2 million.
