Fire chief, finances on agenda for Nevada County Consolidated Fire

Fire chief, financial projections on agenda for Consolidated

The abrupt resignation of Nevada County Consolidated’s fire chief means the board of directors will discuss appointing an interim chief and planning for a permanent replacement at its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday.

Other items on the agenda include continuing employment for a part-time temporary finance assistant and discussing the five-year budget projection that was presented to the board during a special meeting last week.

The board also will discuss contracting for personnel and human resources services and possibly amending its response to a grand jury report that was issued earlier this year.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Station 84, 10135 Coyote St., Nevada City.

Vallejo school board

weighs changing Apache mascot

VALLEJO — Vallejo school officials are considering changing the name of the American Indian mascot of the district’s main high school.

The Vallejo Times Herald reports district administrators will recommend the school board approve a name change for Vallejo High’s Apache mascot at Wednesday’s board meeting.

The mascot has been a long source of tension between people who believe the name honors the Apache and those who feel it is offensive to American Indians.

A staff report by Vallejo City Unified School District says the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights recommends avoiding the use of Native American images and nicknames. The report does not offer a specific replacement for the Apache mascot.

Officials say the school will likely retain its colors even if the board approves the mascot change.
