An Auburn man remained in the Nevada County jail Wednesday after he allegedly wielded a chain saw in a bar fight near Lake of the Pines.
Weston Cecil Burton, 31, was reportedly outside Stinky Mulligan’s Sports Bar on Combie Road in South County with another 31-year-old man at approximately 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, said Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal.
“Our suspect starts touching the victim inappropriately on his chest,” Royal said, initially declining to elaborate on the “chest touching” but said it involved comparison to female anatomy.
“This irritated our victim, who told (Burton) to stop several times,” Royal said.
“Finally (the victim) slaps (Burton) and pushes him to the ground.”
In response, Burton allegedly went to the back of his Chevy truck, pulled out a chain saw, started it and attempted to use it against the victim, Royal said while reading reports from responding deputies based on witness accounts.
“Fortunately, the chain saw stalled,” Royal said, “and another nearby individual took the chain saw from him and took a few other items from the back of his truck that could be used as a weapon.”
The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office’s daily activity logs from Tuesday show a reported physical altercation at Stinky Mulligan’s at that time, listing the incident as involving six subjects.
After the chain saw was wrestled away from him, Burton reportedly fled in his truck but left his credit card behind in the bar, the report states.
Shortly thereafter, the sheriff’s office issued a county-wide BOLO (Be On the Look Out) request to other law enforcement agencies.
“Ultimately, we go to his residence and arrest him for assault with a deadly weapon,” Royal said.
As of press time Wednesday, Burton was still being held in lieu of $10,000 bail for a felony assault with a deadly weapon charge at the Nevada County jail.
