Two arrested in alleged robbery attempt in downtown Grass Valley

Two men have been arrested in connection with a Sept. 29 attempted robbery in which one of the suspects reportedly pulled a knife.

The male victim, who was not identified, reported that two men tried to rob him at the Safeway in the 100 block of Neal Street at about 9:45 p.m.

The victim said the suspects were acquaintances and they had been having a verbal argument over money that was owed.

The victim said he had no money on him but did have groceries and that one of the men — identified as Matthew Madsen, 23 — tried to grab the groceries from him.

During the struggle, Madsen reportedly pulled a knife and pointed it at the victim in a threatening manner, then lunged at him. The victim wasn’t injured and ran back into the store.

A be-on-the-lookout advisory was issued for Madsen Oct. 1. According to Grass Valley Police Sgt. Joe Matteoni, Madsen was contacted Friday after he called authorities and was subsequently arrested.

The other suspect — who reportedly was the one in possession of the knife — was identified as Jack Kibbe, 33, and he was subsequently arrested Saturday. Kibbe reportedly had a meth pipe on him and attempted to run from officers.

Madsen was booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted robbery, criminal conspiracy, making a criminal threat and violating probation and was being held without bail.

Kibbe was booked into county jail on suspicion of robbery, criminal conspiracy, making a criminal threat, assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a concealed dagger and possessing drug paraphernalia. He was being held in lieu of $51,000 bail.
