Event offers young artists ability to share creativity with community

The Safe Schools Healthy Students PARTNERS Family Resource Centers hosted a Children’s Art Auction in late April to raise funds in support of three local school-based FRCs.

Young artists from Nevada County, between the ages of 5 and 12, donated creative and whimsical art pieces for the event. In addition to featuring the work of young local artists, the event auctioned donated artwork from local professional artists Ron Rodecker, illustrator and creator of the acclaimed PBS children’s television series “Dragon Tales,” Loana Beeson and Stan Miller.

At the newly renovated Holbrooke Hotel, the event hosted approximately 70 people, who were entertained with live music by the Sols Duo, Tim Sullivan and Doug Sowell. Starbucks coffee came out to show its support as well and donated both employees and coffee for the event.

In addition to the auction, there was an artist reception before the event for all youth who contributed artwork to be honored.

“I like drawing and painting,” said Bella Drake, who donated a piece of original artwork for the event. “If I draw or paint a picture, I put a lot of work into it. Sometimes you give it to your family, and it stays home, but sometimes it goes far. When I grow up, I want to be some kind of an artist. (The artists’ reception) was the best day of my life.”

Drake’s father, Hawkeye, said the FRC has given his daughter opportunities to develop her creativity and talents, while being recognized by the community.

“She is shining!” he said. “The fundraiser was a wonderful opportunity to share and meet others with the FRC. I was teary-eyed all evening because I was so proud.”

Twenty young artists from various schools within Nevada County donated their works of art for this fundraising event, which raised funds to support core services offered at the FRCs. In addition to raising funds, the event allowed staff and supporters of the Family Resource Centers to celebrate and highlight their work in support of local families.
