The Union newspaper has won two first-place awards in the annual California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest.
As announced at the annual CNPA Awards Show Saturday in Los Angeles, The Union took top honors in its division for “Best Front Page” and “Best Graphic Illustration.”
Copy Editor Kim Midboe led the way with both awards, as she designed the winning front page and created the award-winning graphic illustration for The Union’s Aug. 17 special report on a spike in residential burglaries. Senior Staff Writer Liz Kellar led the reporting on the package, which also included the work of reporters Christopher Rosacker and Matthew Renda. Also published on the front page that day were a pair of stories written by Rosacker on the Grass Valley City Council and the November 2012 general election campaign.
Features Editor Brett Bentley and Midboe won a second-place award for “Best Lifestyle Coverage,” for The Union’s Feb. 4, 2012, Spotlight section and its March 7, 2012, edition of the Farm To Table section.
The Union, which competed in the 15,000-and-under circulation division, also received seven honorable mention achievement awards:
