ASA set to screen ‘Reefer Madness — the Musical’

Join Americans for Safe Access-Nevada County for “Reefer Madness — The Musical,” at 8 p.m. at the North Columbia School House, in Nevada City, this Saturday. In celebration of 420 Day, ASA-NC presents this hilarious spoof of the 1936 classic movie. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. A suggested donation of $10 is being asked to cover expenses.

The original movie was a cautionary tale featuring a fictionalized and highly exaggerated take on the use of marijuana. A trio of drug dealers lead innocent teenagers to become addicted to “reefer” cigarettes by holding wild parties with jazz music.

“Celebrating 420 Day has become a tradition. Our movie screening was planned several months ago, but the timing is ironic in light of the recent bust at NUHS,” said Patricia Smith, chair of the local chapter of Americans for Safe Access. “Prohibition has failed to keep marijuana out of the hands of minors. If you truly want to protect children, clearly it is time for a different approach.”

A dance concert will follow the movie at 9 p.m. featuring the outlaw country rock band Dyin’ Breed, whose music, according to their fans, “provides one helluva good time.” The band rocks out tunes by popular artists with mucho gusto.

Americans for Safe Access’ goal is to regulate medical marijuana rather than advocating for legalization for recreational purposes, so showing a film like “Reefer Madness” is quite a departure from its normal fare. ASA-NC is better known for screening films like “What if Cannabis Cured Cancer” and “Run From the Cure.”

“I think everyone would be better served if we had an open and frank discussion about ending marijuana prohibition,” Smith said. “It’s no longer a matter of if but when this failed policy comes to its end.”
