A San Juan Ridge man arrested after Nevada County Sheriff’s deputies allegedly uncovered an arsenal of nearly 60 weapons and a large amount of marijuana at his residence has begun serving his jail sentence in county jail.
Ray J. Ashcraft, 56, had been charged with possessing an assault weapon and a large-capacity magazine, possessing marijuana for sale, being in possession of stolen property and being under the influence of a controlled substance, after he was arrested July 18, 2012.
Members of the Sheriff’s narcotics task force, accompanied by California Highway Patrol task force members and several search dogs, served a warrant on his residence in the 21000 block of Purdon Road, in a search for firearms and controlled substances, including methamphetamine.
The search allegedly uncovered a total of 58 firearms, several of which were confirmed to have been stolen. There allegedly were several illegal assault rifles in the collection, some of which were found concealed inside a false wall.
Deputies allegedly also seized between 5 and 10 pounds of marijuana cola and more than 30 pounds of shake.
On Feb. 14, Ashcraft pleaded no contest to possession of an assault weapon, in return for an agreed-upon sentence of 120 days in jail and three years supervised probation. Superior Court Judge Candace Heidelberger ordered that a Colt .22 pistol, a Remington bolt action rifle, an AR-15 and several extra-capacity magazines that had been seized were not to be returned.
Ashcraft began serving his sentence at Wayne Brown Correctional Facility Tuesday.
