Justin Ancheta Band set to return home for CD release

After five years of writing, six months of intense production and a week before they release their new CD Plant in San Francisco, the Justin Ancheta Band will celebrate with a Saturday concert at the Center for the Arts for their loyal fans in Nevada County.

Internationally acclaimed musician Justin Ancheta is a guitarist, vocalist, and composer. Ancheta is an alum of both Colfax High School and Applegate Waldorf.

“I’ve played concerts with Joan Baez, the Wailers, Charles Neville, Ricky Skaggs … but there’s nothing like coming home and playing in front of friends in Nevada County,” said Ancheta. “It seems only right to introduce our CD to all our many supporters right here in Grass Valley.”

Joining Ancheta is a team of local musicians. Alex Scammon, the band’s horn player, learned to play saxophone at Nevada Union High School before going on to Harvard and studying with members of the Boston Philharmonic. He started playing with Ancheta in 2004 and has been a regular ever since.

Isaac James is well known to local music lovers. A resident of Nevada County, Isaac attended John Woolman High School and honed his drumming skills in Senegal, Africa, where he studied with a renowned grandmaster of traditional African rhythms. Jay Ladner, the band’s other drummer, met Ancheta at Encore Music in Auburn. The other local members of the band include bass player Joshua Tree, a regular feature of the local music scene and a member of local bands such as the Saul Rayo Band and South Yuba String Band. The only non-Nevada County local grew up in Sacramento: Damian Sol, an accomplished violinist.

Ancheta’s music is an eclectic blend of funk- and jazz-flavored reggae, seasoned with the sounds of klezmer and flamenco.

The Justin Ancheta CD release party takes place at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $15 for members, $20 for non-members and are available at the Center for the Arts Box Office or at BriarPatch Co-op. For more details go to http://thecenterforthearts.org.
