Grass Valley Downtown Association seeks growers manager

As the details of Grass Valley’s Thursday Night Market fall into place, with applications available for interested vendors, the Grass Valley Downtown Association is also seeking a new manager for the agriculture aspect of the event.

A section of the market will be dedicated to 10 local growers and farmers to offer fresh and local produce to the community, and the position calls for a Growers Manager to help with the success of that section.

“We thought it would be ideal to have someone dedicated to this specific area of the market who is well-versed in farmers and the Nevada County Ag department rules and guidelines,” GVDA Executive Julia Jordan said in an email.

The position involves strategy implementation to spread awareness and community outreach about the Thursday Night Market, as well as participation in meetings and planning with the market sub-committee and board to work with farmers, vendors, nonprofits, volunteers, community members and the media, according to a news release. The growers manager position will be responsible for regulations, records and permits and the recruitment of volunteers for set up and take down of the event, the release said. The qualifications GVDA listed include a candidate with strong leadership and communication skills, an insured vehicle and driver’s license, cell phone and knowledge of farming or retail. The salary will be $15 per hour for an average of seven hours per week during the market season, which is held from July through October.

Ray Diggins served as growers manager for several years, until his resignation last year.

Since then, Pablo Wilkins has served as farmers market liaison, but cannot invest his time into the actual managing of the farmers, Jordan said, “which is what prompted the subcommitee to create the request for proposal to seek out an ideal candidate,” she said.
