One of Nevada County’s leading video technology businesses is not closing its Nevada City doors after all, although it is losing about half of its workforce.
Sierra Video’s manufacturing operations are being taken away from its headquarters on the 100 block of New Mohawk Road, and its functions will be “consolidating” with its parent company’s Israel headquarters, said Paul Bogan, who works for Kramer Electronics’ Northwest regional office.
“Unfortunately that is a big chunk of our workforce,” said Richard Wehling, chief operating officer of Sierra Video, who will be without a job in a month.
Kramer Electronics, parent company of Nevada City-based Sierra Video Systems, “is currently consolidating its manufacturing operations in order to leverage Kramer’s global supply chain to better serve its global customers,” it said in a statement issued to The Union Monday in response to requests for comment.
Sierra Video Systems’ Nevada City facility will remain open, Wehling said, although he did not elaborate on what functions would continue to be housed there. The number of employees affected by this move was not disclosed as of Tuesday.
Wehling said Kramer Electronics was in the process of drafting a press release to be disseminated later this week. Numerous calls and emails requesting information about the consolidation to Kramer’s U.S. headquarters in New Jersey have not yielded responses.
“Kramer’s commitment to (and investment in) the Sierra product line and Kramer’s dedication to support Sierra’s customers are stronger than ever,” read the rest of Monday’s statement.
Founded in 1984, Sierra Video Systems specializes in the design, manufacture and distribution of high-quality video and audio routing switchers for the professional AV, broadcast, government and presentation marketplaces. It was one of a dozen or so companies that shot off from Grass Valley Group, such as AJA Video, Ensemble Designs, Editware, NVision, Videoframe, Telestream and Renegade Labs.
Israel-based Kramer Electronics Company purchased the company in November 2003 after a two-year partnership.
